ABOUT THE ARTISANS
Our partner project in Namibia was started by a US Peace Corps Volunteer who was working with orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and HIV/AIDs education. The AIDs pandemic, coupled with the lack of employment, has hit rural northern Namibia quite hard, and often older women ("Kukus") become sole caregivers for young children in the rural areas, after parents pass away or move to the city to find work. This collective was formed as a way to provide an income to the kukus who take care of the children, and as a way of preserving a cultural tradition that is in danger of being lost. The 14 kukus in this collective are based in the Oshikuku area in the Omusati region, and are paid as each piece is completed.
Our "love bows" are small versions of traditional bows and arrows used by the San in hunting. Love bows are used for hunting of a different sort. A young man shoots an arrow into the path of the girl he fancies. If she picks up the arrow, she is interested. If not, she walks on by.
The purchase of our traditional San products provides income for over one hundred women.
