Women In Ghana

Women in Ghana have many protections under the law, but the law does not criminalize domestic violence and marital rape. Sexual abuse of minor females by male teachers and female genital mutilation (FGM) are both illegal but continue to be problems. A strong belief in witchcraft in many parts of the country continues to cause many accused women (often older, widowed women) to be exiled by their communities to “witch camps” in the northern part of the country. Violence and societal abuses against alleged witches are prosecuted by the police service's Domestic Violence Victim Support Unit (DOVVISU), which also handles cases of domestic violence and child abuse.

About the Artisans

Our partners in Ghana collaborate with over 150 talented self-employed seamstresses, who hand produce all our items. The profits generated from the sales of these items go directly back to the women who produce them. The members of this large cooperative receive financial assistance through a raw materials fund and are paid a living wage--over ten times Ghana's minimum wage--for their completed products.
