For some, it might be the perfect composition: everything in focus, with striking views of the cityscape. For others, it could be capturing a moment that is significant to them or their loved ones – a happy family photo at a picnic, perhaps, or an impromptu snapshot of friends before a big night out.

Whatever your motivation for taking photos in Calgary, there are some key tips that can help make your pictures stand out from the crowd. Here are five of our favorites:

1. Take advantage of natural light

If you want to capture that quintessential Calgary sunset or sunrise over the Rocky Mountains, make sure to take advantage of the city's incredible natural light. Whether you're shooting at dawn or dusk, chances are good that you'll be able to get some stunning shots thanks to Calgary's constantly changing weather patterns.

2. Capture candid moments

Whether you're snapping a family portrait before a Sunday drive or capturing a first date at Black Sheep, make sure that you're snapping candid shots of your Calgary trip. While Calgary has a vibrant nightlife scene, most people are in bed by 9pm each night and many romantic spots have time limits on when you can take photos.

3. Be aware of the seasons

As temperatures drop in Calgary during the winter months, you want to make sure that you're wearing appropriate clothing when shooting outside. The same goes for shooting in springtime: be careful not to shoot without a coat when it's chilly out.
